Situated in the Strand in heart of Seven Mile Beach, Spanglish restaurant is one of Cayman’s newest restaurants, first opening their doors in November of 2019.  The restaurant is open Tuesday through Sunday from 11am-10pm and offers guests the perfect fusion of Latin/American cuisine in a comfortable and welcoming environment where both locals, and tourists alike, can mingle and feel at home.

I had the pleasure of sitting down with owners, husband and wife team, Roger & Loany Espinal and enjoying one of the restaurant’s famous Margaritas while learning how this Latin/American themed restaurant came about.

Inspiration for a new themed restaurant in Cayman

Originally from Honduras, Roger has been living in Cayman since he was eight years old and played an integral part in the running of his family restaurant Latin Taste situated in George Town.  Having dreamed of opening his own restaurant for as long as he can remember, he told us he finally got the “key ingredient” to turn his dreams to a reality… his wife and partner, Loany.  Together they came up with the concept for the restaurant that embraced a multi-cultural menu to appeal to both local and international guests with a mouthwatering union of Latin, American and European cuisine.

While faced with many challenges due to the unfortunate timing of the restaurant opening and the Island shutting to tourism, Spanglish has managed to beat all odds by offering high quality food at affordable prices with an unbeatable dining experience and friendly, relaxed atmosphere that keeps customers coming back for more.

How to create a unique Spanglish Margarita cocktail

Roger was good enough to share with me the secret of their incredibly flavoursome Spanglish Margarita which offers a unique twist to this popular cocktail and is already a favorite with patrons.  “My wife loves to experiment with margaritas and wanted to combine our love of the Caribbean and Latin culture by fermenting the local scotch bonnet pepper with tequila giving a smooth but distinctive spicy flavour,” he explained.

Even though many Cayman restaurants and bars offer their own signature Margarita and, local Mexican restaurants also boast Margaritas that pack a punch, the Spanglish Margarita is in a league of its own with an exceptionally smooth and delectable taste that keeps guests coming back for more!

Popular signature dishes on the menu include the Churrasco Argentino, an 8oz Beef Flank Iron Steak with Chimichurri sauce, served with white rice, Tostones, green salad & stewed Spanish red beans and “to share” favourite, La Parrillada consisting of grilled beef, chicken & pork strips served with fried tortillas, corn tortillas, fried beans, fried plantain, Honduranian white cheese, guacamole, Pico de Gallo and Chimichurri sauce, perfect for sharing with family and friends.

With an extensive and diverse selection of restaurants to choose from in Cayman, Spanglish restaurant offer their guests a unique experience with the perfect blend of Latin & American cuisine that promises to please all palates.
