It’s a New Year! New beginnings, time to shape up, sober up and make some New Year’s Resolutions.

While some people opt to cut out alcohol and partake in “Dry January”, meat lovers can learn about the benefits of a vegan diet via “Veganuary”.

A month without meat. Unthinkable? It doesn’t have to be!

Veganuary is marketed as “The New Year’s Revolution”, inspiring and supporting millions of people to try vegan.

Established in 2014, the campaign has welcomed and influenced restaurants globally to include more vegan dishes on their menus.

In 2024, over 2,100 new vegan products and menu items were launched.

The campaign also offers recipes and a celebrity cookbook for individuals to experience.

What exactly is a vegan diet?

First and foremost, a vegetarian diet is one that doesn’t include meat or seafood. Although, there are variations to this! Some people may choose to include dairy products and eggs; it’s a personal decision.

Whereas a vegan diet, is another form of vegetarianism whereby only plant foods are consumed. All foods from animals including meat, seafood, dairy, eggs, honey and gelatine are avoided.

A well-balanced vegetarian or vegan diet has significant health benefits and can reduce the risk of chronic diseases such as obesity, coronary heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes and some types of cancer.

If you opt to become vegetarian or vegan, then you will need to plan your diet carefully to ensure it includes all essential nutrients, minerals and vitamins.

Veganuary 2025 can highlight how you can make this lifestyle shift.

Or visit some of Cayman’s vegan restaurants and sample some of their delicious, nutritious dishes on offer before you consider the transformation.

You may also wish to consult your GP or seek advice from a health professional about how to personally maintain a balanced diet long term and any supplements you may require.
