1 October is World Vegetarian Day which kicks off Vegetarian Awareness Month.

World Vegetarian Day brings global attention to the health benefits of vegetarianism and highlights the deliciousness of a meatless lifestyle.

Did you know that approximately 10% of the world’s population is vegetarian? This equates to over 800 million people.

A diet of veggie burgers, spinach and ricotta ravioli, sweetcorn fritters, mushroom curry, cauliflower baked rice, creamy polenta and curried satay noodles, isn’t so bad!

A vegetarian diet helps protect the body from life-threatening chronic diseases such as cancer, heart disease, diabetes, and stroke. It also maintains bone density, boosts immunity, improves eyesight, and aids skin care and hair growth.

Here are some suggested activities to support World Vegetarian Day :

Share the veggie experience

Become a vegetarian for the day. Whether on World Vegetarian Day or another day, plan to take some vegetarian food to the office and include it in your kids’ lunch box. Experience snacking on carrot sticks, cheese and nuts, and treat yourself to lunch or dinner at a restaurant specialising in vegetarian cuisine.

Experiment and try a meatless option at a restaurant

Meat lovers are notoriously quick to bypass the vegetarian section on a menu at a restaurant. Why not set yourself the challenge of choosing a dish or two from the selection of vegetarian dishes? Take a chance and explore the delicious options.

Shop at the farmers’ markets

Head to Camana Bay on a Wednesday morning or stop by the Farmers’ Market at the Cricket Grounds Monday to Saturday, and enjoy some of the freshest and most delicious vegetables and fruits available in Cayman. Plus, you will be supporting Cayman’s local farmers and agriculture.

If a vegetarian diet is starting to appeal to you,  perhaps start by cutting down on your meat consumption and try out some meat-free dishes at some of Cayman’s restaurants and try cooking some delicious healthy recipes at home.
