Background of the Annual Celebrations
Cinco de Mayo, Spanish for the 5th of May, is a yearly celebration commemorating the victory in 1862 of Mexico’s army, led by General Ignacio Zaragoza, over the Second French Empire at the Battle of Puebla.
Over the years, the celebrations have moved beyond Mexico and have been adopted and shared by Mexicans worldwide.
