Coming up in September is a culinary event that ticks all the boxes: delicious, educational and environmentally focused – it’s CULL #35.  On  September 3rd &  4th 2022, the Cayman United Lionfish League (CULL) is hosting their next tournament where scuba diving teams pick the reefs clean of lionfish while competing for cash prizes.  With over CI$3200 up for grabs each team will try to win in these categories over the weekend:  smallest lionfish, largest lionfish, most lionfish caught and the heaviest overall catch of lionfish.

Interested in competing?  Your team needs to consist of two to eight people, with at least one Department of Environment (DOE) licensed lionfish culler on board.  Sign up your team for CI$10 per person at Tomfoodery Kitchen & Bar in Camana Bay on Thursday September 1st between 5-8pm.

Even if you aren’t competing, you can still come and support the cause by attending the weigh-ins that take place between 4-6pm on both Saturday September 3rd and Sunday September 4th.  During the weigh-ins, Chef Thomas Tennant and the Tomfoodery team will serve complimentary samples of freshly  caught lionfish for the curious public to try.  Anyone attending during these happy hour times can take advantage of the wine and beer specials sponsored by Tortuga Fine Wine & Spirits.  Note that on the final day, Sunday September 4th, Tomfoodery will also open from 1pm to sell their regular menu along with lionfish specials if you are looking for more than a sample.

Swing by if you want to taste and learn more about this invasive species and how you can help protect our reefs by following CULL’s motto “eat ‘em to beat ‘em”.  Unable to attend?  Follow Tomfoodery’s stories on Instagram and Facebook to see the daily lionfish specials they’ll serve the rest of the week.  Once it’s sold out, you’ll have to wait until the next CULL tournament in 2023, so don’t miss out!
